Environmental and Sustainability Policy

Wormsley Estate Limited (collectively, “Wormsley”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) recognise that our operations and the private events hosted on our estate have an impact on the local and global environment.

As stewards of a historic estate in the Buckinghamshire countryside, we are deeply committed to protecting our natural surroundings, promoting biodiversity, and minimising the environmental footprint of our business activities. We integrate sustainable practices into our daily operations and expect the same commitment from the corporate clients, event organisers, and third-party suppliers who utilise our facilities.

  1. Scope

This policy applies to all operations managed directly by Wormsley, all employees and contractors, and all third parties engaging in the dry-hire of Wormsley estate locations and facilities for meetings, conferences, performances, festivals, weddings, and private functions.

  1. Key Environmental Principles

We are committed to continuous improvement in our environmental performance and comply with all applicable UK environmental legislation and regulations. Our core sustainability principles focus on the following areas:

  1. Estate Conservation and Biodiversity

The preservation of the Estate—including our Walled Garden, cricket grounds, woodlands, and agricultural land—is paramount.

  • We manage our grounds and landscapes in a way that protects local flora and fauna, preserves natural habitats, and supports local biodiversity.
  • We ensure that events hosted on the estate are planned and executed in a manner that prevents damage to the grounds, historical structures, and local ecosystems.
  1. Waste Management and Reduction

We adhere to the waste hierarchy: Prevent, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Dispose.

  • We are committed to minimising the waste generated by our own operations.
  • We require our dry-hire clients and their chosen event management companies/caterers to implement robust waste management plans for their events.
  • We strongly encourage the elimination of single-use plastics across all events held at Wormsley. Event organisers are expected to utilise recyclable or compostable alternatives and ensure proper segregation of waste on-site for recycling.
  1. Resource Efficiency (Energy and Water)

We strive to use energy and water as efficiently as possible across the estate.

  • We monitor and seek to reduce electricity, heating, and water consumption within our managed buildings and facilities.
  • We encourage event organisers to be mindful of power consumption, particularly regarding external lighting, heating, and audio-visual equipment, and to use energy-efficient technologies (such as LED lighting) where possible.
  1. Sustainable Supply Chains and Sourcing

While Wormsley primarily operates on a dry-hire basis, we recognise the massive impact that event supply chains have on the environment.

  • We encourage our corporate clients and their caterers to source food, beverages, and materials locally to reduce transportation emissions and support the local economy.
  • We encourage the use of seasonal produce and sustainable sourcing methods for all catering provided on the estate.
  1. Expectations for Corporate Clients and Event Partners

To ensure that large-scale events align with our environmental ethos, we ask all corporate clients, event planners, and third-party vendors operating at Wormsley to:

  1. Submit an Event Waste Plan: Detail how event waste, particularly food waste and packaging, will be minimised, segregated, and removed from the estate responsibly.
  2. Consider Transport Emissions: Encourage event attendees to carpool, or arrange group transport (such as coaches or shuttles from local transport hubs) to reduce the number of individual vehicles entering the estate and lower the overall carbon footprint of the event.
  3. Respect the Grounds: Adhere strictly to our site rules regarding noise pollution, light pollution, and the protection of our natural landscapes and historical assets.
  4. Partner with Ethical Suppliers: Utilise suppliers who share a commitment to sustainability, fair trade, and ethical labour practices.
