Sustainability

Vision

At Wormsley, sustainability isn’t just a priority—it’s a way of life. Our dedicated stewardship of the estate ensures that every action, from wildlife preservation to eco-friendly planting practices, supports a thriving environment. By championing conservation and biodiversity, we aim to make a positive, lasting impact on our land, our community, and our planet.

Wildlife

Wormsley has been at the forefront of conservation efforts, including the reintroduction of Red Kites in 1989. Five breeding pairs were brought from Spain, and these majestic birds continue to soar over the estate today.

All considerations are taken to protect wildlife at Wormsley. Swallows return each year to nest in the stables, while Spotted Flycatchers and Wrens find safe refuge in the Walled Garden. Nesting boxes for Barn Owls are carefully monitored, and rare Chiltern Gentian and orchids bloom undisturbed across the grounds.

Planting

We’ve planted 42 football pitches’ worth of Miscanthus, a highly efficient carbon sink that absorbs more CO2 than traditional crops. By growing this fast-growing grass, we can offset a significant portion of our carbon footprint, all while enhancing soil stability and reducing erosion.

Phacelia, often known as the “bee’s friend,” is a star in our sustainability efforts. This flowering plant attracts a wide variety of pollinators, including honeybees, bumblebees, and hoverflies, helping to maintain a healthy ecosystem. In addition, phacelia suppresses weeds naturally and improves soil structure by increasing organic matter.
